Can Internet Relationships Work?

Internet relationships. We’ve all heard about them. One of your buddies from high school says he’s found a really cool girl on match.com. Another friend starts dating a girl he met on myspace. Your brother starts to get messages on your facebook account from a girl in Brazil. All of these instances beg the question: What is the deal with Internet relationships, and do they really work? And just how do people meet online?

Internet relationships have been around since the very beginning of the Internet. Think about it; as long is there is a way for people to communicate then there is a way to flirt. And that’s how they usually start. In the days before myspace, people would meet in chat rooms and figure out that they had something in common. Sooner or later they would bite the bullet and decide to meet up in the real world. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Or is it?

Internet relationships have gotten bigger and bigger, which means there are more and more fraudsters out there. This means that the really hot girl in the bikini that wants you to view her web cam probably isn’t really a hot girl. And even if a real person contacts you online, it’s kind of hard to be able to tell who that person is really. There’s only one way for an Internet relationship to work.

You have to meet up.

Yes, you can learn a lot about a person online. You can have a two-hour long conversation about Plato and whatnot. You can even exchange pictures of your dogs. But for Internet relationships to be truly successful, you have to see what the person is like offline. Ask her to grab a cup of coffee. See if she wants to go to a movie. You know, do all the things that people do in the real world to get to know each other better. That way you’ll figure out if she really is a size 2 or 22. For your Internet relationship to truly blossom, you need to know if she attracts you when you meet face to face.

Internet relationships can work. Often times they are a great way of meeting people that have similar interests as you. You can get past the awkward first stages of getting to know someone. But for an Internet relationship to truly work out, you’ll have to take it to the next step and spend time together offline.
